Meaning and etymology of language bites in The Dwarven Prince and Other Tales

 

Sounds

  • Most of the letters and digraphs or two-letter combinations sound like English

  • ae sounds like long A in English "take".

Noun Gender and singular/plural forms

  • A root concept such as Alf, ends in a consonant

  • The bare un-suffixed root is also singular and gender-neutral. To make it plural, add -a, so Alf becomes Alfa.

  • To make a personal noun masculine, add -er, so Alf becomes Alfer. to make that plural, add -n for Alfern.

  • Toe make a personal noun feminine, add -in, so Alf becomes Alfin. To make that plural, eliminate the i in the suffix, and add -ae, for Alfnae
