FAE OF ARÁLLYN

Most of the fae races are in decline and many have forgotten their charge of preserving the natural balance, focused instead on dreams of glory, indifference, despair, hate, or their own selfish survival and that of the local natural environment they depend on for life. Few still remember the call of the Gods.

Races:

  • Elves and Dwarves are considered Fae, but are covered as independent races on their own pages. Elves still give token efforts to keeping their charge over nature, but suffer from fatalistic ennui, depressed over Lydrys' betrayal and humanity's short-sighted expediency, and see little hope for the world. Dwarves preserve the balance in subterranean ecosystems, but for their own benefit, not for the benefit of all life. Have become very self-centered and driven by ambitions of glory.

  • Branch-folk (Brannenfolk) - Resemble medium two-branched shrubs or trees less than 13 feet (4 meters) tall and can be as small as dwarves, with shapes of colors of leaves varying with family and individual within the same species. They produces flowers, pollenate and produce seeded fruits or pods for reproduction. Their children sprout from seeds and grow as plants until a certain age, then awaken and uproot themselves to begin life as bipeds. This race was intended to support the Balance by protecting plants and trees, and they still pursues their charge.

  • Mushroom-folk (Piltfolk) - Shapes and colors vary with family and individual but are one species. reproduce by spores and/or can exchange genetic materials by touch. Intended to support the Balance by protecting fungal life in both surface and subterranean environments. Still pursue their charge but are dwindling fast in both environments.

  • Beast-folk (Tirfolk)

    • bear-folk (barenfolk) - 8.5 feet (2.5 meters) or shorter - colors and sizes vary - similar to bipedal were-bears but do not shift. Support the Balance by protecting ursine and mustelid predators and the forest and steppes in general. Still seek to protect the forests and steppes.

    • Wolf-folk (Wulvenfolk) - human height - similar to bipedal werewolves, but do not shift. Intended to support the Balance by protecting canine predators and the forest and steppes in general. Have largely forgotten their charge and pursue survival.

    • Lion-folk (Laivenfolk) - human height - resemble leonine bipedal Khajjit from The Elder Scrolls. Intended to support the Balance by protecting feline predators and the steppes in general. Still attempt to keep their charge, but fighting for survival.

    • Tiger-folk (Tigrenfolk) - human height - resemble bipedal tigriform Khajjit from The Elder Scrolls. Intended to support the Balance by protecting feline predators and the forest in general. Mostly forgotten their charge and focus on survival.

    • Goat-folk (Zigenfolk) - Fauns 70% human height - same height as Dwarves, Intended to support the Balance by protecting small herbivores. Still remember and pursue their charge. Live in meadows of pristine Fae forests.

    • Steer-folk (Rindenfolk) - Minotaurs  6.5 to 8.5 feet (2-2.5 meters) adult height. Intended to support the Balance by protecting large grazing herbivores. Have forgotten their charge and focus on survival.

    • Sea-folk (Zaienfolk) - both races are cold-blooded and lay eggs after intercourse.

      • Swimen-folk - pisciform merfolk, very fishy-looking and fast-swimming similar to the merfolk in The Chronicles of Narnia films, not at all like Disney's The Little Mermaid.  Prefer temperate, sunlit waters with abundant fish. Intended to support the Balance by protecting ocean life, especially plant and algal life and vertebrate fish and mammals. Have forgotten their charge and instead pursue empire building as the People of the Sea. Bitter mutual enemies of the Tinten-folk

      • Tinten-folk - squid-like merfolk - tend to live deep and be dangerous. Intended to support the Balance by protecting ocean predators and all invertebrate animal life including coral reefs. Have abandoned their charge and become bitter and hateful to other sentient life.

    • Lizard-folk (Ezenfolk) - upright reptilian bipeds, resemble Argonians from The Elder Scrolls. Cold-blooded and lay eggs after intercourse.

      • Desert-ezenfolk - tan to brown scales. Intended to support the Balance by protecting the desert and arid steppes, especialy reptiles and invertebrates. Most have forgotten their charge and focus on survival.

      • Swamp-ezenfolk - green to blue scales. Intended to support the Balance by protecting swamps and wetlands, especially fish, reptiles and amphibians. Many, but not all, have forgotten their charge and focus on survival.

    • Eagle-folk (Adlerfolk) - resemble elves with large golden-eagle wings - lay eggs after intercourse. Intended to support the Balance by protecting birds, bats and aerial life in general. About half have forgotten their charge and the others still pursue it.

    • Butterfly-folk or Fairies (Falternfolk) - typical fairies with butterfly wings. Heads have antennae on them in place of ears. Bodies are very light with hollow chitinous internal bones and 3.3 feet (1 meter) tall, wings are very large, unfolding to a 6.5-foot (2 meter) wingspan. Wings fold up, unlike real butterflies, and do not impede walking. coloration is heritable and extremely variable and prone to rich mutation and diversity. Radiate a soft light unless hiding it. Lay eggs after intercourse. Remember their charge to support the Balance by protecting all life, including but not limited to plants and terrestrial invertebrates, but often neglect it in pursuit of fun. Created an enchanted alter-world where time flows more slowly, and they tend to retreat to it from the physical world.

    • (This list may grow with future storylines and new continents)

  • Shimmerfolk - fae beings of pure, concious yet formless light energy. Feed on moonlight and starlight. Sunlight is too intense for them and toxic, so they sleep in dark places during the day. Colors are heritable and vary between families and individuals. Healers, but can also kill. Can read character instantly. Nature's conscience, helping the compassionate, and thwarting the corrupt with deception and tricks to lead them to their demise. They are also powerful with magic or will-acting as their own term "tara" translates, called "vryn" by the elves). The Shimmerfolk remember best of all the Fae their original divine charge over nature, but are the least in power to accomplish that on their own. Huma often call then simply Faienfolk, which means "the fickle ones".

  • Trolls

    • Resemble "Thing" from the Marvel Comics. Bodies closely resemble rock and are very hard and difficult to wound, and easily camouflaged. Vary from Dwarf-size to human-size. reproduce by budding an immature troll from the exterior of the belly, that remains unconscious until it eventually breaks off. Hermaphroditic. Can exchange genetic information with a mate in some manner unknown to everyone but them and both can produce offspring from this exchange. Can also reproduce alone, which produces offspring identical to the parent and tends to happen more often when a groups population is low. Subsist on normal food or oxidation of metals and volcanic sulfur-rich chemicals. Can also absorb usable energy directly through skin from magma heat and light. a sort of thermo-photosynthesis. Can tolerate near-volcanic temperatures, but magma will melt them. Tend to prefer living in the deepest layers of the planetary crust near magma reservoirs, where there is abundant metabolic energy. Often willing to trade precious metals, which they cannot metabolize, for normal foods and reactive metals like magnesium or iron. Also consume rocks rich in silica and carbon, for building their crystalline body structure. Iron pyrite (fools gold) is a favorite treat containing both iron and sulfur, a high-energy combination not unlike sugar for a human. Intended to support the Balance by protecting mineral resources from excessive exploitation. Most have forgotten this charge and have become survivalist and vicious. Were easily wooed by Lydrys.
